Passenger Threatens Bomb on Flight Midair, Sparks Emergency Landing

Passenger Claims Laptop Is a Bomb, Forcing Emergency Landing

A psychiatric patient caused a flight from Florida to Virginia to make an emergency landing after claiming his laptop was a bomb. The incident occurred on Allegiant Air Flight 1023, departing from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.

Mid-flight, 27-year-old Taj Malik Taylor repeatedly told a seatmate, “I have a bomb,” and showed them his laptop, stating, “My laptop is a bomb,” according to FBI affidavits. His frightened seatmate reported these threats to the crew, prompting the pilot to turn the plane around and return to Florida approximately 40 minutes after takeoff.

Upon landing, law enforcement officials, including sheriff’s deputies and a K-9 unit, boarded the aircraft to arrest Taylor, who was quickly removed from the plane. Witnesses confirmed that Taylor had made verbal threats about having a bomb onboard.

Investigators discovered that Taylor, who claimed to have recently been released from a mental health facility, was experiencing a lack of clarity and attributed this to not taking his medication. He also identified himself as a U.S. Air Force veteran and a seminary student at Liberty University.

Despite denying making the threats, Taylor stated that the woman sitting next to him was rude, and he was later charged with felonyMaking threats and providing false information in the first degree. He was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals and faced court proceedings. The FBI is leading the investigation into the matter.

He could face fines up to $25,000, with the possibility of imprisonment for up to five years if convicted of making a false bomb threat. The plane subsequently resumed its journey and arrived at Roanoke around 7:57 p.m.
