Ashley Williams Questioned Over Biden’s Mental Decline

Investigations into President Biden’s Cognitive Health Continue as Former Staffers Testify

Several former aides of President Joe Biden have provided testimony before the House Oversight Committee as it probes concerns about his cognitive condition. Ashley Williams, a special assistant who closely worked with Biden, was the third Biden confidant to appear, giving nearly six hours of closed-door testimony. She declined to answer questions from reporters, emphasizing her cooperation in the investigation.

The committee is examining who within the White House authorized the use of the presidential autopen—an apparatus used since the Truman era to sign official documents such as executive orders and pardons. This inquiry raises questions about transparency and possible oversight of presidential actions.

Before Williams testified, the Trump administration revoked her claim of executive privilege, compelling her to testify without protections. House Oversight Chair James Comer criticized this move, asserting it supports the theory that there was a cover-up surrounding Biden’s health. Notably, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s ex-physician, refused to answer questions, invoking his Fifth Amendment rights. He refused to discuss his medical assessments, including whether he was ever told to lie about Biden’s health or believed him unfit for duty.

Legal experts suggest that questions regarding Biden’s mental health do not fall under HIPAA protections, meaning they could have been legally posed. However, O’Connor only confirmed his identity and invoked the Fifth Amendment for all other inquiries.

Comer argued that O’Connor’s refusal suggests a possible effort to conceal information, further fueling claims of a cover-up. The next hearing will include Jill Biden’s top aide, Anthony Bernal, who was subpoenaed for refusing to testify voluntarily. As Bernal was previously deposed, he must answer questions or invoke the Fifth himself.

Committee members, including representatives like Comer, see these testimonies as evidence of a broader effort to conceal details about Biden’s health, especially amid public concerns over his mental fitness. The investigation continues as more witnesses prepare to testify.
