Star Player Arrested After Plane Fight Over Seatbelt Post-Club World Cup Match

Footballer Arrested After Altercation Over Seatbelt on Flight Home

The Algerian international Youcef Belaili, who plays for Esperance de Tunis, was detained at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport following a confrontation with airline staff during a flight from New York. The incident escalated over a dispute concerning his young son’s seatbelt, leading to Belaili’s arrest.

The altercation occurred after staff asked Belaili’s two-year-old son to fasten his seatbelt, which reportedly sparked a heated exchange with flight crew. French media reported that airline staff called police, and Belaili was taken to a nearby station. He was released later that day as authorities deemed the incident insufficiently serious for formal charges.

Belaili was visibly frustrated, posting a provocative message on Instagram afterward, referring to himself as a “proud Algerian.” His father, Hafid, criticized the police treatment, claiming: “My son was humiliated at Charles-de-Gaulle airport and mistreated despite being an international footballer.”

This is not Belaili’s first encounter with controversy. The 33-year-old previously served a two-year ban after testing positive for cocaine in 2015. The doping suspension was reduced on appeal because his ingestion was ruled unintentional, and he managed to return to competitive football, becoming one of Algeria’s top players.

Belaili’s career has spanned several countries, including stints in France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Tunisia. At Esperance de Tunis, his team recently participated in the Club World Cup, where they finished third in their group after a series of matches against top clubs, with Belaili scoring the decisive goal in their final game.

Despite the recent incident, Belaili remains a prominent figure in football, demonstrating resilience in overcoming past setbacks and continuing to represent his club and country on the international stage.
