Zohran Mamdani’s Bad Negotiations Ruined NYC’s Free Bus Pilot — Adams Blames Him!
NYC Mayoral Hopeful Zohran Mamdani Faces Criticism Over Negotiation Skills
Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate in the New York City mayoral race with a platform centered on free citywide transportation and progressive policies, has been criticized by Mayor Eric Adams for his negotiation abilities. Adams claimed he witnessed Mamdani’s lack of deal-making skills firsthand during a dinner at Gracie Mansion in April 2023, where Mamdani sought support for a pilot program for free buses.
Adams, who has championed the extension of a fare-free bus pilot in 2024, argued that Mamdani’s failure to secure renewal of the program demonstrated his unpreparedness for city leadership. The pilot, covering routes in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, was eventually ended on August 31, 2024. Mamdani and his allies praised it as a major success in an op-ed, despite its expiration.
During 2024 budget negotiations, Mamdani opposed extending the program, clashing with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie over a landlord-friendly measure. It’s alleged that Heastie threatened to withdraw support for the bus pilot if Mamdani voted against the budget, though both parties denied the confrontation.
Adams criticized Mamdani further, suggesting his failure to secure the bus renewal revealed his lack of negotiation skills. Adams also dismissed Mamdani’s broader platform, which includes proposals like rent freezes, free childcare, and city-run grocery stores, funded largely through taxing the wealthy. Critics contend these policies are unfeasible without support from state officials.
Despite the controversy, Mamdani’s campaign did not comment on the allegations. His ambitious policy proposals, costing an estimated $10 billion, aim to address various social issues but face skepticism about their practicality and funding mechanisms.
