Robbie Savage Nears Appointment as Forest Green’s New Head Coach

Robbie Savage is poised to become the next head coach of Forest Green after resigning from his current role at Macclesfield. The decision comes shortly after Forest Green dismissed their manager, Steve Cotterill, following their failure to secure promotion through the National League play-offs, despite finishing third.

The club is expected to formally announce Savage as their new manager on Tuesday. All indications suggest he will take on the position, having previously achieved success leading Macclesfield to the National League North title last season with 109 points, a record-breaking performance.

Chairman Dale Vince confirmed the impending appointment during a recent event, stating, “We’re appointing a new manager, and it will be announced on Tuesday.” Savage, currently a part-owner and manager of Macclesfield, has also resigned as a director according to official filings.

He began his coaching career at Macclesfield last summer, initially serving as director of football before taking over as head coach. Savage is known to be a close friend of Forest Green’s director of football, Mark Bowen, a former Wales teammate. Despite interest from higher-tier clubs, Savage chose to extend his contract with Macclesfield last month, citing his strong emotional connection to the club.

In addition to his managerial duties, Savage has been active as a pundit and was part of Macclesfield’s successful promotion campaign. His decision to leave has sparked speculation about his future, with former England star Wayne Rooney also being linked to the vacant role at Macclesfield, should Savage depart.

Through his achievements at Macclesfield, Savage expressed pride in the team’s progress, noting, “We’ve achieved three promotions in four years, a semi-final appearance in the FA Trophy, and a record-breaking season last year.” He emphasized his commitment to the club, describing it as “a project and a journey” he wishes to continue with the team and supporters.
