Pelicans Select Derik Queen in the 2025 NBA Draft

The New Orleans Pelicans have added Maryland forward Derik Queen with the 13th pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft. Queen, standing around 6’9″ to 6’10”, is known for his versatile skill set on the court.

Though talented, Queen’s game raises questions about his ideal position. His ability to dribble and attack the rim is notable, but he’s considered somewhat of a “tweener” — not quite fitting the traditional roles of a power forward or small forward. He struggles with outside shooting, making his role less clear, especially in the NBA’s more competitive environment.

Historically, coaches like Troy Weaver, the Pistons’ former general manager, have found value in players similar to Queen. Weaver’s early drafts included players like Isaiah Stewart, a 6’8″ forward with defensive upside, who has become a useful backup center. Detroit’s draft strategies often involved targeting players who showed potential in college, even if they needed development.

Looking ahead, Queen’s ceiling could involve developing his outside shot and attacking skills, reminiscent of a player like Nas Reid who can neutralize closeouts with quickness and agility. Queen’s ball-handling and offensive potential were evidenced by a memorable mid-range floater he hit in the NCAA Tournament.

Despite optimism about Queen’s potential, concerns about team fit persist. For the Pelicans, much depends on the health of key players like Zion Williamson, Jeremiah Bojorquez, Trey Murphy, and Herb Jones. If these players stay healthy and continue to develop, Queen could complement the roster well. However, much of the success hinges on various “ifs,” making the team’s future uncertain but promising.
