Extended Heat Wave Hits Eastern US, But Cooler Weather Approaching

A significant heat dome caused an intense heat wave across cities from the Midwest to the Northeast, breaking temperature records and stressing energy systems. On Tuesday, Boston experienced a high of 102°F, while Philadelphia reached 101°F — its first 100-degree day since 2012. Meanwhile, temperatures surpassed 100°F in 13 states, with several locations setting new records.

In response, authorities issued emergency orders to ensure the reliability of power supplies amid surging demand. For example, in the Southeast, Duke Energy was permitted to operate at maximum capacity to prevent blackouts during the extreme heat. A town-wide power outage in Middleborough, Massachusetts, led to the opening of shelters at Nichols Middle School to aid residents and their pets. Power was restored by late evening, with local facilities remaining open for cooling. Similar efforts included crews working tirelessly in high temperatures to restore electricity in New York City’s Bronx and distributing dry ice to affected customers.

Despite the ongoing heat advisories affecting over 102 million Americans, relief appears imminent. Temperatures will drop significantly starting Thursday, with New York City’s forecast high decreasing to around 80°F and Friday expected to cool further to 68°F. The mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions will maintain temperatures in the 90s through the week, but the oppressive heat is gradually easing.

Dangerous weather was not limited to the heat. A thunderstorm in Lexington, South Carolina, struck a group of 20 people, including children, who were cooling off in a lake, highlighting the hazards of severe weather during the heat wave. Additionally, firefighters in Massachusetts battled both wildfires and challenging weather conditions, with some suffering from heat exhaustion.

Authorities continue to advise precautions against heat-related illnesses and remind residents to stay informed about weather updates. Relief is on the horizon, bringing a welcome respite from the brutal temperatures that have challenged millions across the region.
