Nicolas Jackson Receives Two-Match Ban from FIFA Following Red Card in Club World Cup

FIFA has imposed a two-game suspension on Nicolas Jackson after he received a straight red card during Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in the Club World Cup. Although the standard punishment for a red card in this tournament is typically a one-match ban, FIFA has the authority to extend this suspension based on the severity of the incident.

Jackson will be sidelined for Chelsea’s upcoming group match against ES Tunis in Philadelphia and potentially in the knockout stage if the team progresses. The club’s next game will be against Bayern Munich or Benfica, should Chelsea advance further in the competition.

The red card was awarded after Jackson committed a dangerous, studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas just four minutes after entering the game as a substitute. FIFA’s disciplinary body believed the challenge warranted a two-match suspension, doubling the usual penalty for such an offence, in comparison to the three matches given to other players for similar incidents.

Jackson publicly and privately apologized after the incident. His challenge not only resulted in his dismissal but also opened the door for Liam Delap to make a case for a more prominent role in Chelsea’s attack. Jackson has previously been sent off in a match against Newcastle, but Chelsea still managed to qualify for the Champions League that season.
