Liverpool Agrees £35 Million Transfer with Bayer Leverkusen for Jarell Quansah and Plans for Defensive Reinforcement

Bayer Leverkusen has finalized an agreement to acquire Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah for an initial fee of £30 million, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons. The 22-year-old, currently representing England at the Under-21 European Championship, is set to sign a contract lasting until 2030.

As Quansah prepares to leave, Liverpool is shifting focus toward recruiting a new young centre-back. The club is considering options, including interest in Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and other emerging talents with potential, such as Ajax’s Jorrel Hato, a versatile defender capable of playing both centre-back and left-back. Liverpool previously evaluated players like Leny Yoro and Dean Huijsen but moved on to other targets.

Quansah, who joined Liverpool’s academy at age five and made 58 senior appearances scoring three goals, has been integral during his time at the club, winning the Premier League and League Cup titles. Liverpool plans to include a buy-back clause in the transfer deal, maintaining an option to re-sign him in the future.

Liverpool’s recent transfer activity has involved multiple dealings with Leverkusen, including acquisitions of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong. This summer, the Reds have also seen key departures, notably Trent Alexander-Arnold moving to Real Madrid and Caoimhin Kelleher joining Brentford.

Under head coach Arne Slot, Liverpool aims to build on their recent Premier League title victory by strengthening their defensive lineup. Guehi’s current contract situation at Palace, which sees him potentially remaining for another year, influences Liverpool’s transfer plans, as club scouts continue to monitor promising young defenders to bolster their squad for upcoming seasons.
