Karen Read’s potential conviction for drunk driving hangs in the balance as jurors remain deadlocked!

In her second trial, Karen Read may be found guilty solely of drunk driving, as jurors appeared to be divided over one particular charge. To assist their deliberations, the judge provided a simplified and revised verdict sheet.

This new verdict slip was introduced after the jury posed several questions during their second full day of discussions on Tuesday, prompting Judge Beverly Cannone to offer clearer, step-by-step instructions regarding Read’s second charge of manslaughter.

The updated instructions explicitly tell jurors they can convict or acquit Read on manslaughter and other lesser charges, or they may choose a lesser offense to convict or acquit. The most minor offense listed is operating under the influence of liquor, which the jury is instructed to consider if they cannot decide on the more serious charges.

Additionally, the jury asked whether a decision of guilty on some charges and not guilty on others would result in a hung jury, to which the judge provided clarification.

Read faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, manslaughter while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Her previous trial was declared a mistrial.

The case involves allegations that she struck and fatally injured her Boston police officer boyfriend outside a Canton house party, then left the scene. The trial continues to unfold as jurors deliberate.
