Candice King’s Stunning Comeback: How She Secured the ‘We Were Liars’ Role Despite Age Doubts!
Though the character of Bess Sinclair was initially written with Candice King in mind, the creators behind “We Were Liars” reveal that early discussions thought she was too young for the role.
In the new Amazon Prime series, King, age 38, portrays Bess, a high-society mother to three daughters, with the eldest being 16.
“While scripting scenes with Bess, I mentioned to my co-creator Carina Mackenzie, ‘I know she’s too young for this part, but Candice’s voice is all I hear,’” shared one of the creators. Mackenzie acknowledged that despite her youth, King’s “old soul” might make her suitable for the part.
Back then, she was still two years away from auditioning for the part. When she finally auditioned, her performance “blew everyone’s mind,” according to the creators. They shared her audition footage with the team without revealing her identity, and she earned the role based on her talent alone.
King’s relationship with the creators began during her role as Caroline Forbes on “Vampire Diaries,” a part she reprised in the spin-offs “The Originals” and “Legacies.” The creators expressed appreciation for her talent and character, which persisted even after the series concluded.
“It’s wonderful to collaborate with people you admire and trust, and working with Candice is especially meaningful,” they said. They also praised their new cast members, including Joseph Zada, who will star in “Hunger Games” prequel “Sunrise on The Reaping.”
“Her talent is quite extraordinary, and I can’t wait to see her career soar,” they added.
“We Were Liars,” based on the YA novel by E. Lockhart, premiers June 18 on Amazon Prime and tells the story of teen Cadence Sinclair, who tries to piece together a traumatic event on her family’s private island.
