Elon Musk Criticizes MacKenzie Scott for Her Charitable Giving

Elon Musk has publicly criticized MacKenzie Scott for her generous donations to various charities. His comments came via a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, responding to a user’s remark about Scott supporting organizations that focus on issues related to race and gender.

Musk commented, “‘Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouses’ should be listed among ‘Reasons that Western Civilization died,’” referencing Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, and implying a critical view of her philanthropy.

The specific motives behind Musk’s criticism are unclear, but he has previously voiced opinions on initiatives promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In 2022, he discussed voting Republican and suggested that Democratic policies were unfavorable to his companies, Tesla and SpaceX. He also accused Scott’s charitable contributions of overshadowing his business efforts.

In addition, in January 2024, Musk responded to a comment about DEI, stating, “DEI is just another word for racism. Shame on anyone who uses it.”

Scott has donated over $16 billion since 2019, with her most recent contribution being $2.1 billion last year. She generally prefers to keep her donations private, sharing updates through blog posts on her website, which she launched in December 2022. In March 2023, she announced a $1 million grant to 250 nonprofits, with thousands applying for funding.

She has committed to giving away more than half of her wealth, primarily derived from her divorce settlement with Jeff Bezos.
