According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the singer, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., on June 13. The overdose occurred after he was given an excessive amount of medication while incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institute in Butner, N.C.

Documents state that Kelly uses medication for anxiety, sleep, and other issues. While in solitary confinement, prison staff approached him, showing the medications he had, which was recorded on institutional camera footage.

Kelly’s lawyers claimed that prison staff later provided him with more medication and instructions to take it, also caught on video.

In a legal statement, his attorneys explained, “Mr. Kelly took the medication as directed on June 12, 2025, after a report detailed his solitary confinement conditions. On June 13, he experienced dizziness, black spots vision, and fainted. He fell, crawled to his cell door, and lost consciousness, resulting in him being placed on a gurney.”

Page Six reached out to Kelly’s attorneys for comment but has not received an immediate response.
