Arsenal Signs Chelsea Player: Son of Champions League Winner

Arsenal Signs Young Chelsea Player, Son of a Champions League Winner

Arsenal has announced the acquisition of another player from Chelsea during the current summer transfer window, further strengthening their squad in a notable rivalry between the London clubs.

The new signing is the son of a former Champions League winner, who gained recognition when Chelsea secured the trophy for the first time in 2012. After making eight appearances as a trialist for Chelsea’s Under-21 team during the 2024-25 season, he decided to transfer north to Arsenal.

The player in question is Marcell Washington, whose father is Ryan Bertrand. Bertrand was a key member of Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League triumph, starting the final against Bayern Munich, which Chelsea won on penalties. Ryan Bertrand later became a regular at Southampton after transferring from Chelsea in 2015.

Despite his father’s successful career, 17-year-old Marcell emphasizes that he aims to carve out his own path in football. He expressed his feelings about joining Arsenal: “It’s been an honor to learn from him, reviewing game clips and receiving guidance. He’s passionate about helping me improve and become a better player.”

Marcell shared his ambitions for the future: “I want to prove myself with every game and training session. Signing this contract doesn’t mean I’ve made it; I have much to prove, and I look forward to showing that to the coaching staff.”

Speaking about his experience at Arsenal, Marcell said, “This is a very welcoming club. From day one, I felt included by everyone—from staff to teammates. It’s a big club that always strives to succeed, and I want to contribute to that success.”

His signing follows Arsenal’s recent agreement to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea after activating his £5 million release clause. The Gunners are also close to confirming the signing of Noni Madueke from Chelsea for £52 million.
