Exclusive: Mets Logo Illegally Used to Promote NYC’s Zohran Mamdani
Unauthorized Mets-Themed Cap Promoting Mayoral Candidate Sold Online
A counterfeit baseball cap featuring the New York Mets’ signature orange and blue colors and the familiar “NY” logo is being sold online to support a mayoral campaign, without authorization from Major League Baseball or the team. The cap displays the phrase “Zohran for NY Mayor,” with the interlocking “NY” logo, which is a trademarked Mets symbol.
Several vendors, including one called Good Shirts, are offering the caps at around $30, claiming that a portion of the proceeds will go to Zohran Mamdani’s campaign fund. Another retailer, Eletees, lists the cap for approximately $41 and describes it as ideal for Mets games, political rallies, or casual outings, highlighting its support for both the team and the candidate.
Using official team logos and trademarks without permission constitutes trademark infringement. Major League Baseball has a history of pursuing legal action against unauthorized sellers of merchandise bearing its trademarks.
MLB stated it was unaware of the infringing caps until contacted by this source and will examine the matter. The Mets did not comment when asked.
Mamdani’s campaign spokesperson, Andrew Epstein, clarified that Mamdani has no ties to the counterfeit products and that money from the sales is not directed to his campaign efforts.
Both sellers, Eletees and Good Shirts, did not respond to messages seeking comment.
