Kentucky School Chairman Jeffrey Miller Resigns After Controversial Social Media Post
School Board Chairman Resigns Amid Controversy Over Social Media Post
The chairman of a Kentucky school board has stepped down following the resurfacing of a social media comment in which he allegedly expressed a desire for violence against Republicans.
Jeffrey Miller, who led the Erlanger-Elsmere Independent School District since 2016, announced his resignation on Thursday. The news was conveyed by the district’s new chairperson, Sara Shackelford-Ross.
The controversy stems from a 2018 social media post reacting to a mass shooting in Jacksonville, Florida. Miller’s post reportedly included a statement: “I’d be okay with the NRA if these psychos were just once the victims of a mass shooting. WINK WINK: please shoot republicans.”
Kentucky State Representative Steven Doan said the post was brought to light after constituents raised concerns earlier this year. According to Doan, he initiated a discussion about reopening a school track and received messages from community members who feared backlash for supporting him.
One community member expressed serious concerns, sharing a text message that accused Miller of threatening mass violence against Republicans, claiming Miller’s apology in the past was insincere and calling for his resignation to prevent further influence on children.
Doan publicly called for Miller’s resignation in June, criticizing him for inciting political violence. Following Miller’s official resignation, Doan reacted on social media, stating, “It took the entire community to remove this man, now we must find a replacement who will stand up for our children and community.”
The district, serving nearly 2,400 students across eight schools, has begun the process of filling the vacant seat. The district will post the vacancy publicly for two weeks and then hold a vote within 60 days to appoint a new member.
The board confirmed that Miller had previously apologized for the social media comments, which had been made years earlier.
