Chelsea Star Liam Delap Suspended for Club World Cup Semifinal Amid Fan Backlash
Chelsea’s Liam Delap Suspended for Club World Cup Semifinal Amid Fan Criticism
Liam Delap, a new signing for Chelsea, will miss the upcoming Club World Cup semifinal against Fluminense after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament during Friday night’s match. The 22-year-old striker, who joined the Blues from Ipswich Town in a $41 million deal this summer, was booked for a foul on Palmeiras’s Richard Rios in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals.
Chelsea secured their progression to the semifinals, where they will face Fluminense, another Brazilian team, in New York City on Tuesday. However, Delap’s suspension means he will not participate in the crucial match due to his accumulation of two yellow cards.
The decision to caution Delap has drawn criticism from fans, many calling his booking “stupid” and “unnecessary.” Social media reactions expressed frustration, with supporters questioning his discipline and suggesting the suspension was avoidable.
On the night, Chelsea’s victory was secured by an own goal from Palmeiras’ Agustin Giay in the 83rd minute, after Cole Palmer had initially opened the scoring for Chelsea. The match also saw Estevao from Palmeiras, who is set to join Chelsea, netting an equalizer shortly after halftime. The winning goal for Chelsea came from Malo Gusto, whose shot deflected off Giay and found the back of the net in the final minutes.
Aside from his disciplinary issues, Delap continues to wait for his first goal for Chelsea. If the team does not advance past Fluminense, his next opportunity to feature will be in a preseason friendly against Bayer Leverkusen on August 8.
Liam Delap was booked during Chelsea’s win over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup.
