Mamdani Leads NYC Mayoral Race Ahead of Cuomo, Adams, and Sliwa: New Poll

Mamdani Leads in New NYC Mayor Poll, but Vulnerable to Opposition Coalescence

The latest poll indicates that Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist candidate, currently holds an advantage in the race for New York City’s mayor, securing support from 35% of voters in the general election. However, his lead may be precarious if opposition voters consolidate around a single candidate.

The survey results show Andrew Cuomo with 29%, Republican Curtis Sliwa with 16%, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams with 14%, and independent Jim Walden with 1%. The pollster noted that Mamdani’s early momentum could diminish with closer scrutiny of his platform.

Challenges Facing Mamdani and the Political Landscape

Mamdani’s proposals, such as imposing a $9 billion tax on the wealthy and corporations, and redistributing property taxes to wealthier neighborhoods for funding city services, could alienate some voters. His stance on Israel, including support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement, might also pose issues beyond the Democratic primary.

Despite these challenges, Mamdani benefits from a fractured opposition field, making a win in the general election more feasible for now. After the primary victory, Mamdani celebrated with union leaders and supporters.

Poll Dynamics and Support Fragility

When voters are asked if they would support Mamdani or anyone else, 48% choose Mamdani, while 46% prefer other options. Even after being informed about his policies and controversies, support remains relatively stable at around 44%, with opposition rising to 50%. Conversely, Cuomo’s support remains steady at nearly 30%, despite recent negative headlines about him and Adams.

Adams continues to face unfavorable public opinion, with 62% viewing him unfavorably. Cuomo also remains unpopular among 52%, whereas Mamdani’s favorability stands at 47%.

Implications for the Election

The poll’s author highlighted that Mamdani’s support, though currently above Cuomo’s, could dwindle under increased scrutiny. The remaining opposition candidates’ baggage might resurface to challenge his lead.

The survey involved 568 likely voters and had a margin of error of ±4%. It was conducted through various methods, including phone, text, robo-calls, and online panels, and funded independently by subscribers.
