Andover Officer Kelsey Fitzsimmons S:ho:t by Fellow Officer Amid Baby Threats

Police officer’s fiancé involved in armed confrontation after restraining order attempt

The fiancé of a recently shot off-duty police officer is seeking sole custody of their 4-month-old son following a chaotic incident at their home. Court documents reveal that the officer, Kelsey Fitzsimmons, a new mother, has exhibited concerning behavior during and after her pregnancy, leading her partner to pursue a restraining order, fearing she might harm their child or herself.

Her fiancé, a firefighter, expressed fears she could harm their baby, citing episodes of suicidal ideation and aggressive behavior, including punching her stomach while pregnant. He recounted an incident on June 28 where Fitzsimmons allegedly assaulted him multiple times and, in a drunken state, chased after him and their child when he sought help from friends. During the incident, multiple police departments were contacted, and her parents arrived to take custody of the child.

He also warned authorities that Fitzsimmons threatened to take their son far away and had previously spoken about harming herself and the baby. He feared if she was left without him, she might kill the infant, considering she claimed she had nothing else to lose aside from him.

On Monday evening, when officers arrived to serve a restraining order, Fitzsimmons engaged in an armed confrontation with police, which resulted in her being shot once in the chest. She was transported by helicopter to a Boston hospital, where she remains in stable condition.

Details indicate that Fitzsimmons, who joined the Andover Police Department less than two years ago, gave birth in February and was hospitalized shortly after for postpartum depression. Following her discharge, she surrendered her department firearm and was placed on administrative leave, with her firearm license temporarily suspended.

Her lawyer confirmed she was under psychiatric care during her postpartum period. Although she was cleared to return to work in June, she was still on leave during the recent events. Her fiancé has filed for full custody, asserting that Fitzsimmons poses a threat to their child and herself.
