Everton Stars Pay Tribute to Liverpool’s Diogo Jota at Anfield

Tragic Loss of Diogo Jota in Car Accident

Stars Youssef Chermiti and Beto, both of Portuguese origins and playing for Everton, paid tribute to the late Diogo Jota by laying wreaths at Anfield, representing their club and expressing their condolences.

Jota, a Liverpool forward, tragically died on Thursday along with his brother, Andre Silva, in a car crash near Zamora, Spain. Their Lamborghini overturned and caught fire after a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle on the A-52 highway. Emergency responders were unable to save them. Andre Silva, 26, played for Portuguese second division team Penafiel.

The brothers were traveling to Santander to catch a ferry to England, following advice that Jota should avoid flying after recent lung surgery. The accident stunned the football world and prompted thousands of fans to gather at Anfield to pay their respects. On Friday, Everton players Chermiti and Beto, alongside former Everton midfielder Ian Snodin, contributed to the ongoing memorial.

Jota’s death resonated across football circles. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, now with Ajax, fought back tears as he laid flowers and a scarf, leaving a heartfelt message: “Rest in peace my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you.”

Preparation for his wedding just two weeks prior added to the tragedy, with Reds captain Virgil van Dijk expressing devastation and disbelief. Andy Robertson, Jota’s close teammate, reflected on the profound loss, emphasizing the impact on his family and the club.

Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a crash in northwestern Spain.

Jota, who played 182 games for Liverpool and was part of last season’s Premier League-winning squad, had been advised to avoid flying after recent surgery. Instead, he was traveling by boat when the tragedy occurred. He and his wife, Rute Cardoso, who attended a wedding recently, are parents to three children. The crash took place on the A-52 highway, a major route connecting Portugal to northern Spain and France. The wreckage indicated the brothers were driving a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder en route to the UK. Authorities confirmed two fatalities around 12:35 a.m., and the Portuguese Football Federation announced their deaths early the following morning.
