Majority of Trump Voters Support Tougher Sanctions on Russia

A recent poll indicates that approximately 77% of Americans who supported President Trump in the 2024 election favor imposing additional economic sanctions on Russia amid its ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Vandenberg Coalition’s survey, conducted in late June, revealed that 75% of Trump voters consider Russia a threat, and 70% believe preventing Russia from invading other European countries is essential.

Senator Lindsey Graham announced that Trump has approved a bill he introduced to intensify sanctions on Moscow. Graham stated, “If you’re importing products from Russia and not assisting Ukraine, a 500% tariff will be applied to your goods.”

He criticized the reliance on countries like India and China, which buy about 70% of Russia’s oil, fueling Putin’s war efforts. Graham’s proposed legislation, supported by over 80 co-sponsors, aims to give the president authority to levy tariffs on nations supporting Russia, including China and India, to curb their aid to Moscow.

Graham also noted that Trump has the authority to implement these measures, which would be available after the July congressional recess.

Vladimir Putin giving a statement
Many pro-Trump voters, including self-identified MAGA supporters, favor a strong U.S. role on the global stage, with 92% believing maintaining US dominance over Russia, Iran, or China enhances world safety. Some polled also support military actions, including recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.

The poll also found that most Trump supporters favor a proactive US foreign policy, with 71% advocating leadership rather than reactivity, contrary to some of Trump’s previous campaign rhetoric favoring containment and isolationism.

Survey results on US sanctions
The majority of Trump voters, including many who support MAGA, prefer a strong American presence internationally, aligning with a belief that US global leadership contributes to national and world security.

On foreign relations, about 45% of GOP voters see Russia as a competitor, while 40% view it as an enemy, according to Pew Research.

The Vandenberg Coalition, composed of former officials from both Republican and Democratic administrations and led by international relations expert Elliot Abrams, surveyed 1,225 Trump supporters in late June with a margin of error of ±2.8%.
