Liverpool’s Arne Slot Pays Heartfelt Tribute to ‘Very Special’ Diogo Jota at 28

Tributes Pour in After the Passing of Diogo Jota at Age 28

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences following the death of star forward Diogo Jota. The 28-year-old footballer was involved in a tragic car accident early Thursday morning, which resulted in both his and his brother Andre Silva’s fatalities.

The incident occurred when Jota’s Lamborghini tire blew out while overtaking another vehicle, causing the car to overturn and catch fire. Emergency responders were unable to save the two brothers. Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, 26, was a player for Portuguese second division club Penafiel.

At the time of the accident, Jota was traveling with his wife, Rute Cardoso, whom he married just days prior on June 22 in Porto, his hometown. They were on a journey to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, where Liverpool was preparing for pre-season training just days away. Jota had been advised to avoid flying following recent lung surgery, making the road trip a preferred option.

In a poignant tribute, Slot shared: “What can anyone say at a time like this when the pain is so raw? My first thoughts are of a father, son, brother—and of Diogo’s family, who have suffered an unimaginable loss.” He emphasized the club’s support, stating, “You will never walk alone.”

Jota’s impact extended beyond his impressive 37 appearances last season, where he scored nine goals during Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign. Fellow players like Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, along with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, have also paid homage to him.

The Liverpool star, who played 37 times for Slot's side last season, died on Thursday morning

Slot reflected on Jota’s qualities: “He brought hard work, commitment, and goal-scoring talent to our team. He was much more than a player—an individual who never sought fame, but radiated kindness and warmth. He deeply cared for his family.”

He had married childhood sweetheart Rute just a few days ago and was returning to England for pre-season

Jota’s wife, Rute, shared a joyful social media post about their wedding, describing it as her “dream come true.” The footballer recently expressed his happiness about their union and his excitement for his upcoming season.

Slot concluded his tribute: “When the time is right, we will celebrate Diogo, remembering his goals, singing his song. Until then, we mourn his loss and honor his memory. His name is Diogo—and he will never be forgotten.”
