Matildas Star Ellie Carpenter and Wife to Face Off in WSL Rivals Weeks After Wedding

Matildas Star Ellie Carpenter Signs with Chelsea

Ellie Carpenter, a prominent player for the Matildas, has committed to Chelsea with a four-year contract. The 25-year-old right-back moves to the WSL champions after five successful seasons at Lyon, where she secured two Champions League titles.

Carpenter will unite with former Lyon coach Sonia Bompastor at Chelsea and will also be team-mates with fellow Australian, Sam Kerr. However, she will face her wife, Danielle van de Donk, on the pitch, as Van de Donk recently announced her departure from Lyon to join newly promoted London City Lionesses for the upcoming season.

Expressing her excitement about the transfer, Carpenter said, “I’m thrilled about this new challenge. It’s a fresh adventure, and I believe it’s the right step for me. I look forward to contributing fully to this club and its success.” She added, “Joining such a prestigious club in women’s football is an honor. Chelsea has a strong history of success, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”

The football power couple set to become rivals

The couple, now set to compete against each other, are both leaving Lyon for new clubs.

Carpenter debuted for Australia at age 15 and has participated in three Olympic Games, including becoming the youngest woman to play football at Rio 2016 at just 16. Her trophy cabinet also includes five domestic league titles in Australia and France.

Chelsea’s women’s football head, Paul Green, praised Carpenter’s versatility and experience: “She’s an athletic full-back who loves attacking, and we’ve monitored her for years. We’re eager to see her growth and contributions to our talented squad.”

Carpenter and Van de Donk have been open about their relationship since 2023, announcing their engagement at the start of 2024. Their wedding took place in a picturesque château in southern France, where they shared heartfelt photos and moments.

Van de Donk, currently with the Netherlands national team, is competing in this summer’s Women’s Euros and recently signed with London City after three years at Lyon. She expressed enthusiasm for her new club, saying, “It’s a family-like environment, and I’m excited to be part of London City. The club’s competitive spirit aligns with my playing style.”
