Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart Passes Away at 90

Jimmy Swaggart, a prominent and controversial televangelist, died at the age of 90, two weeks after suffering a heart attack at his home in Baton Rouge. He never regained consciousness following the medical emergency.

In a statement, his family announced, “Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ. We rejoice knowing we will see him again someday.” Swaggart’s passing marked the end of an era for his followers and the Christian broadcasting world.

Jimmy Swaggart, in his later years, remained a charismatic figure in religious broadcasting.

Swaggart gained a massive following through his televised sermons during the 1980s, but his career was marred by scandal when he was caught on camera with a prostitute in 1988. Despite the controversy, his ministry rebounded, and his TV audience grew again, reaching around 800,000 viewers in subsequent years.

His legal troubles persisted, notably in 1991, when he was stopped by police and found with another prostitute, leading to the cancellation of several contracts. Nevertheless, he continued preaching independently, founding the international SonLife Broadcasting Network in 2010.

Known for his outspoken views, Swaggart criticized Roman Catholicism, calling it “a false religion,” and expressed anti-Semitic beliefs about Jewish suffering. He was also a talented musician, receiving a Grammy nomination for his 1981 gospel album “Worship.” He was related to rock legend Jerry Lee Lewis and country singer Mickey Gilley, both of whom passed away in 2022.

Swaggart’s loved ones remembered him as a dedicated worshiper, warrior, and faithful servant of God. He leaves behind his wife, Frances, and children, including Donnie Swaggart, who continues to preach at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries.
