Pep Guardiola Slams FIFA Referees’ Chief Over Rico Lewis’s Extended Ban & Reveals Injury Update!

Pep Guardiola Criticizes FIFA Over Extended Rico Lewis Ban and Provides Injury Update on Key Player

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has strongly opposed the decision to extend Rico Lewis’s suspension, which now keeps him out of the game for three matches. Lewis received a red card during City’s opening match in the Club World Cup after an accidental challenge on Wydad AC’s Samuel Obeng. Despite City’s successful appeal, FIFA upheld the ban, prompting Guardiola to express his dissatisfaction with FIFA’s refereeing leadership.

Guardiola commented: “I haven’t spoken directly to Pierluigi Collina, the head of FIFA referees, but I believe officials don’t fully understand the incident. Rico’s action was accidental, and I think the punishment is too harsh. He’s young, and this suspension feels excessive. Hopefully, he can return for the next rounds if we progress.”

Lewis has already served one match, missing City’s 6-0 victory over Al Ain. He will now sit out the upcoming game against Juventus and the subsequent knockout stage match, as his suspension was upgraded after FIFA’s review.

Additionally, Guardiola provided an update on midfielder Claudio Echeverri, who suffered an ankle injury during the same game. The 19-year-old scored a remarkable free-kick but had to be substituted at halftime and is expected to miss the remainder of the tournament. Guardiola expressed his sympathy: “Claudio’s ankle problem is serious; he will be out for two to three weeks. It’s disappointing because he’s young and talented.”

Echeverri’s stunning goal drew comparisons to Zinedine Zidane’s famous strike at Euro 2004. He had joined Manchester City from River Plate in January 2024 for £12.5 million before being loaned back to Argentina for another year.

As City advances, Guardiola emphasized the importance of resilience: “All teams face these challenges. We need to be prepared to suffer through tough moments, especially with the next World Cup approaching.”
