Teenager Killed During Water Gun Fight Turns Deadly
A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot in a Bronx park during what began as a playful water gun fight that turned violent. The incident occurred in Starlight Park around 8 p.m., amid a sweltering heat wave pushing temperatures close to 100°F.
The teenager, Darrell Harris, was involved in an altercation after being soaked with water from a gel-pellet gun. He then lunged at the individual with the water gun. Suddenly, a friend of the water gun user pulled out a real gun and opened fire, hitting Harris in the head and arm. The bullets caused fatal injuries, and Harris was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his wounds.
Witnesses reported seeing the gunman, possibly wearing a ski mask, fleeing the scene along with his water gun-wielding accomplice. Investigators recovered a knife, four shell casings, and multiple water guns at the bloodstained scene. The victim’s body was found in the vicinity of Sheridan Boulevard and 173rd Street in Crotona Park. Harris was pronounced dead later that evening.
The grieving mother, Kelli Lewis, shared that Harris, who had just turned 17, rarely spent time outside and had no known enemies. She reflected on the tragic timing, revealing her son had promised to be home by 9 p.m. She described Harris as a boy who wasn’t troubled or involved in street violence.
Harris’s older brother, Jamal Hunter, was shot and killed in 2021 on a Bronx street, making this loss especially devastating for the family. Lewis emphasized the dangers of gun violence and expressed her sorrow over her son’s death on what was supposed to be a celebration of her other son’s birthday.
She concluded, “You take someone’s life and wound an entire family in a moment’s decision—that wasn’t necessary.”
