Barcelona’s Sporting Director Reveals Shocking Update on De Jong’s Future—Is He Leaving the Club?
Barcelona’s Sporting Director Deco Provides Update on Key Players’ Futures
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has shared insights regarding the futures of three prominent players amid ongoing transfer speculation.
While one player might be leaving, Deco emphasized the club’s desire to retain the other two stars. Barcelona has already strengthened its squad this summer by signing goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol. On the departure front, defender Clement Lenglet has mutually agreed to terminate his contract to join Atletico Madrid permanently, and young player Alex Valle moved on to Como.
Among the key players, Frenkie de Jong, with just a year remaining on his contract, remains a target for Manchester United. Deco, however, expressed his strong wish for de Jong to stay: “The Frenkie we had this season is the one we want. We want to continue with him. He has one year left, and we will evaluate everything calmly.” The club values de Jong highly, having appeared in 46 matches last season across all competitions.
Deco also highlighted the importance of defender Ronald Araujo, who struggled with injuries last season but remains a vital part of the team. “Ronald has a contract, has renewed recently, and despite a tough season, he is considered one of the best centre-backs in the world. Leaving is not in his plans; he wants to regain his top form,” Deco stated.
Conversely, winger Ansu Fati might depart on loan this summer to gain regular playing time, with Monaco among the interested clubs. Deco acknowledged the need for Fati to play regularly: “He needs game time. We are open to loan options if that is what he wants. At 23, he still has much growth ahead of him and can learn a lot.”
Also linked with a move is Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, who is reportedly eager to join Barcelona this summer.
