NYC Subway Attacker: Career Criminal Busted for Unprovoked Slashing
Man with Criminal Historys Spree of Subway Attacks Continues Unchecked
An individual with a troubled past, identified as Demitri Marshall, 32, was found wandering freely after a violent assault outside a Manhattan subway station, despite previous violent incidents and ongoing court cases. The latest attack involved Marshall suddenly slashing a 27-year-old man across the face near the East Broadway station, requiring seven stitches for a deep cut. The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed his fear, emphasizing that the assailant’s experience and history could have led to a fatal outcome.
Fernando, the victim, recounted that he was waiting to cross the street after exiting the train when Marshall attacked him with a knife-like object. Shocked and bloodied, Fernando said he was fortunate not to have suffered a more severe injury or death. He was taken to hospital and is now recovering. Despite his injuries, Fernando was able to provide police with a description of the attacker, who had fled the scene.
Marshall was arrested nearby about half an hour later and charged with first-degree assault. He was ordered held without bail on Rikers Island during his arraignment, which took place despite prosecutors requesting a $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond. The suspect pleaded not guilty.
This incident is not isolated. Last month, Marshall was involved in another unprovoked subway slashing on a Bronx train, where he inflicted a similar wound on a 21-year-old. Law enforcement reported that Marshall had seven prior arrests, including assaults, robbery, burglary, and fare evasion, stretching back to 2012. Notably, he served over a year in prison for a robbery conviction and was released on parole this year.
Marshall’s criminal history also includes a brutal attack in March on a man on a subway platform, which was classified as a hate crime. Despite multiple serious offenses, courts granted him supervised release multiple times, prompting concern over the laxity of the justice system. Marshall is scheduled for another court appearance on October 30.
