Hearts’ Rise to the Top: No Mad Vlad This Time!
Revisiting Hearts’ 2005-06 Campaign and the Fall of George Burley
The current resurgence of Hearts under new ownership and a promising start is reminiscent of their historic 2005 season. Back then, the club experienced a meteoric rise, fueled by ambitious signings and a clear goal of winning the Scottish Premiership within three years.
Romanov’s involvement began in February 2005 when he completed a deal to buy a stake, promising radical change. Instantly, he replaced popular manager John Robertson with George Burley, a seasoned coach renowned for guiding Ipswich Town to European competitions.
Romanov’s financial backing led to an influx of European talent, including Czech midfielder Rudi Skacel and Lithuanian strikers Roman Bednar and Edgaras Jankauskas. The team started strong, winning their first seven games, including notable victories over Kilmarnock and Dundee United, and impressively defeating Rangers 1-0 at Tynecastle — a sign of their title ambitions.
Burley’s squad quickly broke records and gained momentum, with players like Skacel scoring consistently and the team topping the league table. However, cracks appeared as Romanov’s heavy-handed interference and questionable transfers caused tensions behind the scenes.
In October, amidst a strong title challenge, Burley was unexpectedly sacked, with reports citing disagreements over squad decisions and Romanov’s increasing control as reasons. The news stunned fans, many of whom displayed solidarity with the manager during the subsequent derby against Hibernian, a game Hearts won convincingly.
Despite the turmoil, Hearts finished second that season, qualifying for the Champions League qualifiers and winning the Scottish Cup. Yet, many supporters still wonder how far the club could have gone had Burley’s tenure been allowed to reach its full potential.
The season marked a turbulent chapter in Hearts’ history—one filled with promise, controversy, and what-ifs—highlighting how internal conflicts and managerial upheavals can influence a club’s destiny.
