Man United Legend Gets Career Comeback as Ruben Amorim Reintegrates Final Bomb Squad Member

Forgotten Manchester United Defender Gets Another Chance as Ruben Amorim Begins Reintegrating Players

Tyrell Malacia has been given an opportunity to restore his place in the Manchester United squad after rejoining the first team training sessions under manager Ruben Amorim.

The 26-year-old defender was part of a group dubbed the “bomb squad” this summer, training separately from the main squad and missing out on the pre-season tour in the United States.

Amorim previously stated that the group of five players, which included stars like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho, all hoped to leave the club. Rashford and Sancho moved on loan to Barcelona and Aston Villa, respectively, while Antony and Garnacho secured permanent transfers to Real Betis and Chelsea.

Malacia, however, faced difficulties securing a move; a proposed loan to Spanish side Elche fell through on deadline day, and a potential transfer to Turkey also collapsed before the transfer window closed. The Dutch defender had been training alone as he searched for a new club but has now been fully reintegrated into Man United’s first-team setup.

Previously, Malacia had spent time on the sidelines due to a meniscus tear, which was complicated by a failed surgery, delaying his recovery. During his debut season at United in 2022-23, he made 39 appearances, mainly playing as a left-back following a £14.6m transfer from Feyenoord. He later spent 18 months recovering from injuries, including a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, where he helped the team win the Dutch title by overturning a significant points deficit.

With United’s poor start to the season—losing to Brentford and sitting 14th in the Premier League—the return of players like Malacia adds much-needed depth to a squad under pressure. The club has recorded two wins, one draw, and three losses so far, and was recently eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town.
