Marco Silva Slams Premier League Referees Over Fulham Penalty Call
Marco Silva Criticizes Premier League Officials Over Controversial Fulham Penalty Decision
Fulham manager Marco Silva expressed his frustration with the refereeing decisions during their 3-1 loss to Aston Villa, particularly over a penalty claim he believes was wrongly denied.
The incident in question occurred while Fulham was trailing 1-0, when Josh King fell after a challenge from Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez inside the box. Despite the clear tackle, the referee opted to book King for diving instead of awarding a penalty.
Silva previously voiced dissatisfaction this season over a disallowed goal from King at Chelsea, which was overturned after a VAR review, alongside a disputed penalty given to the hosts. He emphasized that King’s challenge was genuine, not a foul, and criticized the officials for not awarding the penalty.
“It’s evident from the video — Martinez clearly fouled King, 100%. When a goalkeeper tackles a player inside the box, a penalty is usually awarded. Today, that wasn’t the case, and it’s frustrating,” Silva stated. He also pointed out another contentious moment where a shot from King struck Matty Cash’s arm, but no penalty was given. Silva compared this to a previous incident where a penalty was awarded for a similar handball, suggesting inconsistent refereeing standards.
Silva’s comments reflect his ongoing concerns over officiating in the league, which he believes impacts the outcome of matches unfairly.

While Silva was visibly upset about the missed decision, he reaffirmed his support for his players, insisting that they do not cheat and that mistakes happen in football.
