Iowa Rep. Hinson Calls for Investigation Over High School Celebrating Bisexual Awareness Week
High School Celebrates “Bisexual Plus Awareness Week” Sparks Outrage and Calls for Investigation
A 14-year-old student’s participation in a school segment celebrating “Bisexual Plus Awareness Week” has led to strong criticism from a US congresswoman. Republican Representative Ashley Hinson condemned Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Iowa, for airing the segment without parental approval, calling it inappropriate.
Hinson sent a letter to the Department of Education Secretary, urging an investigation into how the school handled the broadcast. She expressed concern that students were exposed to content supporting bisexual and non-monosexual identities—such as bisexual, pansexual, and queer—without informing parents. The segment included students explaining “non-monosexual identity,” emphasizing the complexity of sexual attraction beyond traditional binaries.
“These messages were broadcasted to students without parental knowledge or consent,” Hinson stated. “Schools should educate, not indoctrinate.” She criticized the school’s role in promoting sexual identities, arguing it conflicts with some families’ beliefs and faith.
Hinson also referenced a recent executive order signed by former President Trump, aimed at withholding federal funding from institutions promoting gender ideology and race-based curriculum. She praised the order, affirming the importance of parental involvement and transparency.
The congresswoman demanded that schools notify parents and provide opportunities to opt out of sensitive content, stressing that accountability is crucial. “Parents should be involved in their children’s education, not caught off guard,” she said.
The school district responded by stating that an ongoing review is in progress to determine whether policies were violated during the segment’s production and airing. They reaffirmed their commitment to fostering respectful and inclusive environments for students and staff in accordance with district policies.
