Free Speech Wins: Sinclair Stations to Air Jimmy Kimmel
Sinclair Stations Resume Airing Jimmy Kimmel Live After Pressure and Protests
One of the major corporate owners of ABC affiliate stations that initially refused to broadcast Jimmy Kimmel Live has now reversed course. Sinclair, known for its conservative stance and friendly ties to former President Trump, announced that its ABC stations will begin airing the show again starting Friday night.
In an official statement, Sinclair emphasized their commitment to providing engaging and accurate programming for their audiences. They highlighted ongoing discussions with ABC, during which they proposed measures to improve accountability and community engagement—such as establishing a network-wide independent ombudsman. Although ABC and Disney have yet to adopt these proposals, Sinclair believes such steps could help build trust and transparency.
Importantly, Sinclair clarified that their decision to temporarily preempt the show was made independently, without government influence. They emphasized the importance of free speech rights, asserting that broadcasters have the right to make judgment calls about their local content, even if those decisions are unpopular.
Despite Sinclair’s efforts to seek concessions from ABC to restrict Kimmel’s content, ABC rejected these proposals. As a result, Sinclair is now returning to air the show. The primary catalyst for this change was significant viewer protests; many audiences were demanding to see Jimmy Kimmel, and Sinclair stations faced revenue losses due to reruns of other programs replacing his show.
This situation marks a notable victory for free speech and viewer influence, as Sinclair was ultimately compelled to accommodate public demand. While some companies like Nexstar continue to refuse airing Kimmel, widespread public pressure has demonstrated that popular opinion can influence corporate decisions.
