German Soccer Club Denies Censorship of Player Comment on Charlie Kirk Shooting

Borussia Dortmund Denies Imposing Social Media Restrictions on Felix Nmecha

Borussia Dortmund has dismissed reports suggesting that they have implemented social media restrictions on forward Felix Nmecha following his public condolences for Charlie Kirk, an American political commentator who was recently murdered.

Kirk was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University, igniting heated debates across the political spectrum. In response, Nmecha posted tributes on his Instagram story, including an image of Kirk with a message of peace and prayers for his family, as well as a reflection on the need for faith and mercy in today’s world.

Following the backlash, German media outlet Bild reported that club officials, including managing director Lars Ricken and sporting director Sebastian Kehl, advised Nmecha to have his social media posts approved by the club before sharing. However, Borussia Dortmund has officially denied any such restrictions, emphasizing that they do not pre-approve personal posts, which are protected under freedom of expression.

Nmecha, a Christian and former Manchester City youth player, signed with Dortmund in 2023. His move was controversial among fans due to previous social media activity, including reposted videos mocking transgender individuals and making statements perceived as homophobic and transphobic. Despite protest from some supporters, Dortmund’s leadership publicly stated that Nmecha has convinced them he does not hold any transphobic or homophobic beliefs.
