Fatal Shooting at Dallas ICE Facility by Gunman with Resentment Toward Immigration Enforcement

A gunman opened fire on an ICE transportation vehicle at a Dallas detention center, resulting in one death and two injuries before taking his own life. The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on a nearby rooftop.

Jahn fired multiple rounds from an 8mm bolt-action rifle he purchased in August, targeting a bus carrying ICE agents and detainees. Three migrants inside the vehicle were struck by gunfire. Investigators noted that the bullets had anti-ICE messages written on them.

The FBI revealed that Jahn used several online aliases, including “#Impeachment” and “Frank Hoenikker,” a nod to a character in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel “Cat’s Cradle.” He was an avid gamer, logging over 17,000 hours across various multiplayer first-person shooter games such as “Rust,” “Team Fortress 2,” and “Left 4 Dead 2.”

Hours before the attack, Jahn was actively playing these games on his Steam account, created in 2011. A map depicting radioactive fallout was also found stuck to his car near the scene, with a note indicating nuclear detonation zones in the US.

Motivated by deep resentment towards immigration enforcement officials, Jahn left a note criticizing their work as “human trafficking” and dismissing them as “people showing up to collect a dirty paycheck.”

Jahn’s social media activity also included references and nicknames, such as “Hankiebob” and “Frank Hoenikker,” indicating his interest in literature and satire. The FBI says campaign-related messages on ammunition and his notes suggest deliberate intent and foreknowledge of potential casualties.

He harbored strong anti-immigration sentiments, with a note describing the facility workers as motivated by greed. The shooting is being investigated as an act of targeted violence, labeled by officials as “the very definition of terrorism.”
