JJ Redick: LeBron is in a Great Mental Spot | Pelinka Lets James ‘Choose His Story’
Los Angeles Lakers Focus on LeBron James’ Future Amid Team Transition
During media day, questions arose about the evolving dynamics within the Lakers, specifically regarding LeBron James and the team’s future trajectory. A reporter inquired whether discussions have taken place with James about shifting from his leadership to that of Luka Dončić, who was acquired earlier this year.
Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ general manager, responded by referencing his conversations with James. He highlighted two notable meetings—one in Sag Harbor during free agency and another in Los Angeles recently—where James appeared to be in a positive mental state and committed to giving his best.
Redick, who co-hosts a podcast with James and was recently appointed head coach, shared his insights. He has communicated with James regularly, noting that the superstar is in a good place mentally and ready to contribute.
Last season, Redick led the Lakers to a 50-32 record, securing the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference before falling in the first round of playoffs. The team made significant roster moves this year, notably trading for Dončić from Dallas and signing him to a three-year, $165 million extension.
Meanwhile, James, who exercised a $52.6 million player option this summer, remains a central figure in discussions about the team’s future. While his contract situation and plans beyond the 2025-26 season are uncertain, Pelinka emphasized respecting James’s choice regarding his career timeline.
When asked about LeBron’s potential stay beyond his current contract, Pelinka expressed a desire for the star to retire as a Lakers legend, calling it a “positive story” for the franchise.
