GOP Gains in NJ: Jack Ciattarelli Surges, National Republicans Need to Step Up

New Jersey Gubernatorial Race Tied at the Top

Although the state tends to lean Democratic, the upcoming governor’s race presents a significant challenge for the Democrat candidate, Rep. Mikie Sherrill. Recent polls indicate a tight contest, with support evenly split between her and Republican former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, both polling around 43–46%. This close race highlights the potential for a Republican victory in a state typically dominated by Democrats.

The race is a clear signal that the GOP has a solid shot at winning, urging national Republican efforts to pour resources into supporting Ciattarelli. Voters are expressing dissatisfaction with the current Democratic Governor, Phil Murphy, who holds a low approval rating of around 35%, and are prioritizing issues like the economy and crime—areas where Republicans generally have the edge.

Fundraising and campaign support are crucial. With New Jersey’s media landscape spanning major markets in New York City, Philadelphia, and within New Jersey itself, extensive advertising campaigns require substantial financial backing. Democratic efforts have already surged, with the Democratic National Committee allocating a record $3 million to support Sherrill. Meanwhile, Republican-aligned super PACs have committed at least $1 million for advertisements and could significantly increase their investment.

Additional campaign resources, along with strategic alliances, could give Ciattarelli an advantage. Historically, New Jersey voters have shown some Republican support—electing governors Christie and Whitman twice each, even though they haven’t backed a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. With nearly half of voters backing Donald Trump last year, the Republican candidate’s chances have never been better.

The support from Republicans nationwide could prove decisive in this tight race, making it a contest worth watching closely.
