While the upcoming release of Taylor Swift’s album “The Life of a Showgirl” sparks excitement nationwide, real showgirls in New York City believe their daily routines are far more authentic than the glamorous perception often portrayed.

Broadway performer Mikayla Renfrow of “Chicago the Musical” expressed her anticipation for Swift’s interpretation of a stage performer’s life, suggesting the singer-songwriter might delve into the emotional depth beneath the glitzy costumes and makeup. Renfrow, who plays Liz— a character known for her fiery personality— describes her own life as a blend of routine and rare moments of fun.

Renfrow’s schedule is rigorous, with six nightly performances, including double shows on weekends, often preparing backstage with costumes and makeup. Her definition of a showgirl is broad— involving the nightly ritual of red lipstick, dramatic eyeliner, and high heels, regardless of the genre.

“The glamor of putting on makeup and sparkling outfits is a big part of it,” she said. “I remember watching Cher help Christina Aguilera style her makeup in the movie “Burlesque,” which inspired me to embrace this glamorous routine every night.”

Offstage, Renfrow finds downtime simple—shopping, enjoying coffee with friends, and reading. Her nightly routine begins with arriving early to stretch and rehearse, relishing the ritual of becoming her character, which she fondly describes as “the real glamour.”

Despite the rigorous schedule, Renfrow loves balancing her life as a Broadway showgirl with her love for books and quiet evenings, exemplifying how her double life blends the glitz of stage with everyday simplicity.
