Bill Ackman Backs Cuomo for NYC Mayor, Urges Adams to Step Aside

Bill Ackman Reverses Support, Endorses Andrew Cuomo for NYC Mayor

In a surprising move, billionaire investor Bill Ackman has announced his endorsement of former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming New York City mayoral race. Just two months prior, Ackman had supported Mayor Eric Adams, citing Cuomo’s lack of energy to challenge socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani.

Ackman praised Adams for his leadership qualities, highlighting his charisma, empathy, and support during crises. However, he now believes Adams should step aside, as recent polls indicate his support has dwindled to single digits, well below Mamdani’s high 30s to low 40s. Ackman pointed out that Adams’ declining popularity and ongoing scandals have made a Cuomo candidacy more viable, especially with Cuomo’s polling in the mid-20s.

Ackman emphasized Cuomo’s experience and leadership record, acknowledging past mistakes but expressing confidence that Cuomo’s proven resilience and background make him better suited to win a tight race. He highlighted Cuomo’s accomplishments as governor and his potential to lead NYC to improvements, despite serious allegations of sexual misconduct which Cuomo has denied.

He urged Adams to consider stepping aside to allow Cuomo to secure a victory, emphasizing the importance of unity for the city’s future: “Mayor Adams, it’s time for you to play a crucial role by gracefully stepping aside to enable Andrew Cuomo’s success. We will all be grateful.”

Meanwhile, sources close to Adams say he remains committed to running for re-election. Adams responded to rumors, affirming his intention to seek another term: “I am running for re-election and looking forward to winning again.”

On the Republican side, nominee Curtis Sliwa has also declined pressure to withdraw from the race, despite discussions about potential offers of political positions in federal administration to encourage him to step back, which he has refused.
