Malcolm Gladwell Says He’s ‘Ashamed’ for Supporting Trans Athletes in Women’s Sports
Malcolm Gladwell Recalls Feelings of Shame Over Handling of Trans Athletes Panel
Malcolm Gladwell expressed regret about his conduct during a prominent sports conference focused on the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports. He admitted to feeling “ashamed” of his performance and acknowledged that he was influenced by outside pressure.
On a recent podcast, the author reflected on his participation in the 2022 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, where he described himself as having behaved dishonestly by claiming to be objective. Gladwell said he was “cowardly” and shared the same stance as some panelists who opposed trans inclusion, despite personally aligning with pro-trans perspectives.
During the discussion, Gladwell noted that most audience members likely supported his views, but only a small fraction felt comfortable expressing that publicly. He recounted doubts that arose when a trans athlete on the panel challenged the panelists, saying, “Ross, you have to let us win,” highlighting how extreme some arguments had become.

Gladwell observed that many in the audience probably shared his opinions but hesitated to voice them. He also reflected on his initial stance regarding a transgender athlete, Lia Thomas, describing her as an “elite swimmer” whose participation was a “difficult case,” and suggesting that her involvement in women’s sports was only discussed in certain media outlets.
In the podcast, both Gladwell and Ross Tucker agreed that if they were to participate in the same conference today, their perspectives would be substantially different, citing a shift in societal attitudes that extends beyond the realm of sports.
