Malcolm Gladwell Condemns Being Coerced into Supporting Trans Athletes in Women’s Sports
Malcolm Gladwell Reflects on Past Stance on Trans Athletes in Sports
Malcolm Gladwell has expressed regret over his previous approach to discussing transgender athletes in sports, admitting he was “ashamed” of his performance during a 2022 conference panel. He revealed that he was influenced by external pressures and failed to fully support the pro-trans participants’ arguments.
During a recent podcast interview, Gladwell explained that he was “cowed” and did not speak openly in favor of inclusivity. He shared that the panel featured discussions where other panelists, such as Ross Tucker, took opposing views. Despite backing the pro-trans side, Gladwell acknowledged that the audience’s real opinions might have been different, estimating that most of the crowd was sympathetic but hesitant to voice their support.
He recalled a moment on the panel when a trans athlete was told, “Ross, you have to let us win,” which made him realize that the arguments were pushed to their extremes. Gladwell noted that while some panelists like Dr. Joanna Harper and ESPN writer Katie Barnes received applause for their positions, others, including himself, remained silent.
Gladwell reflected that the cultural climate has evolved, and if the same panel were organized today, the perspectives would be quite different. He emphasized that even those advocating for trans inclusion are now reconsidering their claims, acknowledging a broader societal shift beyond the sports world.
