Alabama Man Joshua Richardson Arrested for Threats Against California’s St. Michaels Abbey
Alabama Man Arrested for Threats and Armed Presence at California Monastery
An individual from Alabama was detained by Orange County authorities after allegedly making threats and arriving at a Catholic monastery in California armed with weapons. The suspect, Joshua Michael Richardson, was found with brass knuckles, knives, high-capacity magazines, and body armor.
The incident began when Richardson sent threatening emails to St. Michael’s Abbey, which prompted a sheriff’s investigation. Reports indicated that he escalated the situation by traveling from Alabama to Southern California, arriving on the same day he visited the monastery, and making additional threats in person.
A priest at the monastery notified authorities two days later, leading to Richardson’s quick apprehension. Law enforcement searches of his vehicle revealed tactical gear, including large magazines, body armor, knives, and brass knuckles.
Richardson was taken into custody without incident and later charged with multiple offenses, including possession of brass knuckles, carrying a concealed dagger, possessing large-capacity magazines, and criminal threats.
The Diocese of Orange expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s swift response and emphasized the importance of community vigilance, especially amid rising threats against religious sites nationwide. Authorities have increased patrols around the monastery, and the abbey has enhanced its security measures.
Authorities stressed the importance of reporting suspicious activity and are urging anyone with pertinent information to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
