Carolyn Maloney Keeps Options Open After Nadler’s Retirement

Potential Run for Retired NY Representative’s Seat

Former Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has indicated she is considering a bid to reclaim her former House seat following the announcement of her successor, Jerry Nadler, not to seek re-election next year. Maloney, who lost her district seat in a tough primary battle after redistricting eliminated her district, is keeping her options open as the election approaches.

In an interview, Maloney expressed that she’s currently focusing on upcoming local elections but is receiving encouragement from colleagues and constituents to run again. She stated, “I’m keeping my options open and my eyes open.” She emphasized her belief that New Yorkers need someone capable of continuing Nadler’s work, saying, “We don’t need someone who needs an introduction to Congress.”

Nadler, 78, recently announced his departure, citing the need for generational change and referencing the political climate, including ongoing presidential debates. His exit is expected to attract significant attention, with potential candidates including State Assemblyman Micah Lasher, City Councilman Erik Bottcher, and former City Comptroller Scott Stringer. Inside sources suggest Nadler plans to endorse Lasher for the 2026 race.
