How Emiliano Martinez Spent Deadline Day as Manchester United Transfer Fell Through

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez reportedly spent the final hours of the transfer window at his club’s training ground, attempting to secure a move to Manchester United.

The 32-year-old was seen at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training facility in Warwickshire, likely anticipating a transfer after missing two of his team’s Premier League matches this season. According to reports, Martinez had been in contact with his Argentina teammate and United defender Lisandro Martinez, trying to facilitate the move.

However, formal negotiations did not begin until Martinez returned to Birmingham for pre-season training, after which Manchester United inquired about a potential loan deal. Despite these efforts, the transfer ultimately did not happen on deadline day, as United’s club officials decided against pursuing the move. Instead, they signed 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for approximately £21.7 million, with no sell-on clause involved.

Lammens has agreed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, aiming to strengthen United’s goalkeeping options. The young keeper has previously played 64 matches for Antwerp and helped secure their Belgian Super Cup victory in 2023. He also earned his first call-up to the Belgium national team in March.

Expressing his excitement, Lammens said, “I am extremely proud to join Manchester United. It’s a dream come true. I feel a positive atmosphere here and believe I can make a real impact.”

Meanwhile, Martinez’s departure was halted as he left for international duty with Argentina, preparing for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Ecuador. Both Aston Villa and United declined to comment on the situation.
