Qatar Bankrolled Years of Films by Zohran Mamdani’s Mom
Qatari Support for a Socialist Candidate’s Mayoral Bid Sparks Controversy
Support from Qatar’s royal family and state-funded cultural institutions has been directed towards a political outsider, Zohran Mamdani, who is running for mayor, according to recent reports. Since at least 2009, Qatar has backed various creative projects by filmmaker Mira Nair, whose work has been supported by the Doha Film Institute, founded by Sheikha Al-Thani. The institute also funded Nair’s 2012 film The Reluctant Fundamentalist with a $15 million budget and supported her projects in East Africa and Qatar.
In recent months, Sheikha Al-Thani has been publicly promoting Mamdani’s campaign on social media, sharing positive polling results and showing her support for him. She also invited Nair to participate in Qatar’s cultural program during the 2022 World Cup festivities, including a stage adaptation of her award-nominated film Monsoon Wedding.
Despite her support for Qatar’s cultural initiatives, Nair has publicly criticized Israel’s policies and boycotted the Haifa International Film Festival over its stance on the region. Meanwhile, Qatar maintains strict Islamic laws and has been accused of human rights abuses, including the exploitation of migrant workers during the 2022 World Cup construction.
In an interview, Nair praised the sheikha’s support, claiming that Her Highness appreciated her film and musical endeavors. However, critics argue that Qatar’s backing conflicts with its internal social policies, which severely restrict women’s rights and persecute LGBTQ+ individuals. The filmmaker has not responded to requests for comment on these issues or her potential ties to Qatari funding.
Experts warn that Qatar’s global influence campaign involves supporting organizations and figures that align with its strategic interests, despite alleged human rights violations. While there’s no clear evidence of Mamdani’s direct connections to Qatar, his campaign has avoided denying or condemning the royal family’s role, emphasizing only his commitment to human rights.
Overall, the controversy highlights concerns over the influence of authoritarian regimes in democratic processes and cultural spheres.
