Minneapolis Middle Schoolers Use Buddy System to Protect Younger Students During School Shooting
Students Display Heroism Amid School Shooting in Minneapolis
In a shocking incident during a mass shooting at a church-sponsored school, brave middle school students from Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis acted swiftly to prevent a much greater tragedy. The students, part of the school’s longstanding “buddy system,” protected their younger peers by shielding them from the gunfire outside the church.
The school’s tradition pairs older students with younger ones during important events, such as the annual back-to-school Mass, to teach proper conduct and community spirit. As chaos erupted, videos captured older students rushing children out of the church, pushing them down under pews and covering them to keep them safe.
When the gunman, identified as Robin Westman—the lone shooter—began firing outside the church, the quick-thinking students pushed their friends down and protected them from harm. School principal Matthew DeBoer praised the actions of the students and staff, noting that their heroic efforts may have prevented an even worse outcome.
One child was injured by a shotgun blast while shielding another student. Tragically, two students—8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski—lost their lives. The attacker, Westman, identified as transgender and a graduate of the school, committed suicide after the assault, with evidence suggesting he targeted the school he once attended. His mother, Mary Grace Westman, who worked as a parish secretary, has hired legal counsel and is not cooperating with authorities.
Community members responded to the tragedy with vigils, gathering at Lynnhurst Park to honor the victims. Law enforcement secured the scene outside the school following the shooting, which left 18 others wounded, including 15 children aged between 6 and 15.
Robin Westman left a manifesto—posted on YouTube—in which he expressed regret over his gender transition and lamented being “brainwashed” into being trans. Authorities continue their investigation into the attack as community members mourn the loss of their young loved ones.
