Chinese Researcher Caught Trying to Steal U.S. Cancer Research in Texas

A Chinese scientist was detained at a Texas airport after attempting to smuggle confidential U.S.-funded cancer research data back to China. The incident took place at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, where border patrol agents discovered sensitive medical records on his laptop before his flight on July 9.

Yunhai Li, 35, was employed as a researcher at MD Anderson Cancer Center since 2022. He was working on developing a vaccine to prevent the spread of breast cancer but abruptly left his position on July 1. Court records reveal he uploaded nearly completed research projects to a Chinese server on his personal computer, deleting the files from the institution’s systems when confronted.

Prosecutors allege that Li transferred his work to a personal Google Drive while employed and also shared files through a Chinese cloud service called Baidu, linked to research for Chongqing Medical University. He was acting under a non-immigrant scholar visa and failed to disclose his foreign research engagements or funding sources, despite signing a non-disclosure agreement.

Authorities found unpublished research, trade secrets, drawings, and models stored on Li’s laptop, which included files linked to high-level government projects funded by organizations such as the NIH and the Department of Defense.

Li reportedly justified his theft to police, claiming he believed the research was his personal right and that it was “going to waste.” He was charged with theft of trade secrets and tampering with government records, offenses that can lead to up to ten years in prison and substantial fines. Authorities indicated that he may face additional federal charges related to national security.

He posted a $5,100 bond and surrendered his passport as part of his release. The case highlights ongoing concerns about intellectual property theft and espionage targeting U.S. medical and scientific research.
