Man United Star Faces Criticism Over Fitness Ahead of Crucial Season

Manchester United Player Criticized for Weight Concerns Ahead of Key Season

A former coach of Manchester United has raised concerns over Matthijs De Ligt’s fitness, suggesting that his weight issues are impacting his performance on the field.

Rene Meulensteen, who served on United’s coaching staff during Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary tenure, commented that De Ligt has become “a little too heavy,” which may not be beneficial despite his naturally strong physique. He emphasized that the upcoming season will be pivotal for the Dutch defender to improve his consistency and influence at the club.

Meulensteen pointed out that De Ligt’s form has been inconsistent due to injuries last year and fluctuating playing time under manager Ruben Amorim. He also noted that managing De Ligt’s weight could be crucial for Amorim’s tactical plans, especially given the number of central defenders available at United.

“When he first played at Ajax, he was a strong athlete. However, I believe he has gained weight over time, which hasn’t always helped his game. This season will be critical,” Meulensteen explained. He added that stability in defense depends on players understanding each other’s movements and reacting appropriately, making consistency essential.

De Ligt transferred to Manchester United from Bayern Munich last summer for £60 million, reuniting with Erik ten Hag, who had previously worked with him at Ajax. Despite high expectations, injuries limited his debut campaign, though he showed promise in the opening matches of the season, notably shielding against Arsenal’s new signing Viktor Gyokeres.

As United prepares for their next match against promoted Burnley, the focus remains on De Ligt’s fitness and consistency to secure a successful season and establish himself as a key component of the defensive line.
