Trump to Allow 600,000 Chinese Students into US Amid Ongoing Trade Talks
President Announces Plans to Welcome Over 600,000 Chinese Students to the U.S.
In a recent statement, the President revealed an intention to significantly increase the number of Chinese students studying in the United States, aiming to admit up to 600,000 students, the highest in U.S. history. Currently, approximately 270,000 Chinese students attend American universities.
“There are many concerns about restrictions on Chinese students, but I want to assure everyone that we will allow their students to come,” the President said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good relations with China. He added, “Getting along with China is very important.”
This announcement comes after previous efforts by government officials to tighten visa restrictions for Chinese nationals, particularly young higher education students. For instance, efforts included revoking thousands of visas—more than 4,000 during the first 100 days of his administration—and attempts to nullify an additional 7,000 visas held by students at Harvard, though these measures faced legal obstacles.
Despite stricter policies in the past, the President has reiterated his support for Chinese students’ admission into the U.S. During the period, the number of Chinese students peaked around 370,000 in 2019 before declining due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trade relations between the two countries remain tense, with tariffs and disputes overshadowing diplomatic efforts. The President’s renewed stance on student visas signals a potential shift toward fostering closer educational ties as part of broader diplomatic negotiations.
