Kilmar Abrego Garcia Detained by ICE in Baltimore

Immigration Officials Detain Alleged MS-13 Gang Member Facing Deportation

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 30-year-old accused of gang affiliation and human smuggling, was re detained by immigration authorities after reporting to an office in Baltimore. His legal team alleges he may be deported to Uganda, despite his protests of innocence.

Abrego Garcia was released from a Tennessee jail last week where he was held pending trial on human smuggling charges. He had previously been deported to El Salvador earlier this year but was returned to the U.S. in June. Despite legal negotiations, he rejected a plea deal that involved cooperating with authorities.

U.S. officials reportedly offered to send him to Costa Rica if he admitted to smuggling migrants into the country, threatening deportation to Uganda otherwise. His lawyers highlight that Abrego Garcia denies gang membership and has denied the charges altogether. They argue the accusations are baseless and retaliatory.

His legal history includes a traffic stop in 2022, during which officers suspected human smuggling after discovering eight passengers in his vehicle without luggage—though he was not charged at that time. Additionally, he has been accused of domestic abuse, with his wife, a U.S. citizen, actively advocating for him.

Public protests have arisen, with supporters holding signs demanding that he remain with his family rather than be deported to Uganda. Advocacy groups argue that his case exemplifies the complex nature of immigration enforcement and deportation policies.
